WSFA airs GOP, Democratic runoff debates in AL District 2 Congressional race | #republicans | #Alabama | #GOP

MOBILE, Ala. (WSFA) – WSFA 12 News aired runoff debates for candidates in both the Republican and Democratic runoff races over the course of two days. Four candidates are seeking to win their party’s nomination Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District general election.

The Republican runoff aired Monday and featured businessman and former state Sen. Dick Brewbaker against attorney Caroleen Dobson.

The Democrat runoff aired Tuesday and featured Shomari Figures, a former deputy chief of staff to the U.S. AG Merrick Garland, against Alabama House Minority Leader Anthony Daniels.

Video clips from both debates and be seen below.

In February, WSFA and our Gray Television sister station, WALA Fox 10 in Mobile, hosted District 2 candidates from the state’s Democratic and Republican parties at the Davis Theatre in Montgomery before the field was narrowed in Super Tuesday voting.

The four candidates recently joined WSFA and WALA for the latest debate, which was recorded at Government Plaza in Mobile. The event was held in partnership with the Alabama Republican Party, the Alabama Democratic Party and the Mobile Chamber of Commerce.

The 2nd District seat, once reliably in GOP hands, was redrawn by court order to give African-Americans and other minorities a chance to elect a minority candidate. U.S. Rep. Barry Moore, who currently holds the seat, jumped into the GOP primary race in neighboring District 1, beating the incumbent.

The GOP controls the U.S. House by a razor thin margin. Republicans are seeking to hold onto the District 2 seat and help preserve control of Congress’s lower chamber, while Democrats are looking to flip the seat, and House control, in November.

Voters will choose their party’s nominee during the runoff election set to take place on Tuesday, April 16.
