Women’s Hockey Outlasted 4-3 by Providence in Mayor’s Cup


PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A pair of goals from freshman Jade Iginla gave the Brown women’s hockey team the lead early, but Providence College used three unanswered goals in the second period to outlast the Bears by a score of 4-3 on Saturday afternoon in the 27th annual Mayor’s Cup at PC’s Schneider Arena.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Iginla recorded the first two-goal game of her career. She now leads the team with five goals and eight points.
  • Sophomore Olivia Williamson scored her fourth goal of the season in the third period to pull the Bears within one with just over 11 minutes remaining.
  • Juniors Anna Gallagher and Sonja Bjornson, and freshman India McDadi all tallied assists for Brown.
  • Providence outshot Brown 28-14 in the game and held a 24-16 advantage on faceoffs.
  • Brown went 1-for-4 on the power play while Providence went 0-for-1 with the man-advantage.

 
HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Brown jumped on board first at 7:57 of the opening period when McDadi executed a give-and-go with Iginla, who redirected the pass through the five-hole to stake the Bears to the early lead.

  • Providence answered back on a goal by Sara Hjalmmsrsson at 12:16 to even the score through one period of play.
  • Iginla put Brown back in front with her second goal of the game at 3:53 of the second period when Gallagher crashed the net, leading to Iginla backhanding in the loose puck in front.

 

  • The Friars came right back just 46 seconds later with the first of three unanswered goals to close the period. PC grabbed its first lead of the day just 3:50 later right off a faceoff, where Naomi Neubauerova was all alone in the slot and one-timed it inside the left post. PC collected another at 13:21 to hold a 4-2 lead at the second intermission.
  • Williamson pulled Brown within one, scoring on the power play after blocking a clearing attempt near the blue line and letting go a shot from the top of the slot with 11:25 left to play.

 

  • The Bears drew a hooking penalty with 1:24 to go and skated 6-on-4 with the extra attacker, but were unable to score the equalizer.

 
UP NEXT
Brown will return home to start a five-game homestand that will span the entire month of December beginning on Friday, December 2 at 6 p.m. against Colgate.
