Willmar City Council approves land purchase agreement with Duininck Concrete – West Central Tribune | #citycouncil

WILLMAR

— A land purchase has been approved that will facilitate a local company providing the concrete for construction of the new rail park in Willmar.

Following a closed session Oct. 16, the

Willmar City Council

approved a purchase agreement with

Duininck Concrete

for the sale of 13.67 acres of land in the

Willmar Industrial Park

at a cost of $9,000 per acre, or a total of $123,030, according to Aaron Backman, executive director of the

Kandiyohi County and City of Willmar Economic Development Commission

.

In an interview with West Central Tribune on Oct. 18, Backman said the final land sale requires the council to conduct a public hearing before approving an ordinance authorizing the land sale, which is expected to take place in November, according to Backman.

The land is northeast of the land purchased by

Midwest and Bluegrass Rail for the construction of the Willmar Rail Park

and northwest of the FedEx property. The Willmar Rail Park will utilize the

Willmar Wye

, which was completed in 2022.

Duininck plans to construct a ready-mix plant to supply the needed concrete for the construction of the rail park, according to Backman, who also said that future development may include the construction of Duininck corporate headquarters.

Duininck will utilize the third spur of the

Willmar Rail Park

to bring in concrete powder and the ready-mix plant will have a baghouse system to control the concrete dust that is produced in the operation.

A potential Willmar Rail Park would include an 8,000-foot rail loop coming off the Willmar Wye railroad bypass west of Willmar. A grain storage facility is planned along the west side of the project area and Nexyst would be on the east side of the loop. The map illustration shows four rail spurs. The project area is generally north of Minnesota Highway 40 and west of the new FedEx distribution center and Magnum LTL trucking and would be developed by Midwest and Bluegrass Rail.

While

upgrades are taking place on Minnesota Highway 40

to accommodate the additional traffic into and out of the rail park, Duininck will be allowed ingress and egress to its property via Trott Avenue Southwest and the old airport taxiway, according to Backman.
