In the wake of his City Commissioner bid last November, 22-year-old Titus Willis is setting his sights on the mayoral race in 2024, citing a need for the City to accomplish various key tasks.
“I just felt like if I was able to [become] mayor, I feel like we’d be able to get so much more done as a City,” Willis said.
Willis, a self-described entrepreneur, emphasized his commitment to addressing issues such as pro-business regulations and policies. Willis expressed concern that existing regulations hinder businesses from thriving while maintaining consumer-friendly practices.
According to Willis, the current could potentially drive companies away, prompting him to advocate for changes that would prevent missed opportunities.
Willis also aims to tackle the rising issue of homelessness in the city and enhance recreational activities for the youth.
“I feel like they may feel like no one cares, and I want them to know that someone does care. There’s a lot of us who care,” Willis said.
Willis also highlighted the need for improvements in city infrastructure, including roads and sewage systems. He proposed supporting the police department through increased funding to recruit new officers, aligning with the city’s growth.
In terms of community engagement, Willis emphasized his commitment to open communication, proposing public forums and direct contact opportunities for constituents.
In the 2023 City Commission special election, Willis competed against incumbent interim Commissioner Sharon NeSmith, who retained the seat with 55.51% of the votes. Jerry Ray Davis finished second with 29.55% of the vote, while Willis was third with 14.94% of the vote.
