A historic night for the city of West Sacramento Wednesday as a standing-room-only crowd watched what city leaders referred to as “herstory” in the making.For the first time in city history, the council is entirely made up of women.”I grew up here in West Sacramento. I grew up here at city hall,” said newly-elected city council member Verna Sulpizio Hull. “Now to sit at the dais and represent the community I love, it’s meaningful. It’s powerful.”Sulpizio Hull replaces outgoing councilmember Chris Ledesma who is stepping down after his years of city service.Dawnté Early, having served the city previously for a year, won the election to represent the city’s newly-formed District 3 during the historic council term.Early’s children did the honors of swearing her into her council seat.”To be able to show that to my 9-year-old daughter, she is going to know, not only is it possible to be the president, not only is it possible to lead your local government, but I’ve seen it happen,” she said.Current council member Norma Alcala discussed how the council composition will help the city.”It’s really important to have a diverse council,” Alcala said. “We have grandmothers, we have moms, we have people from very different backgrounds. … There’s a lot of experiences that I believe are going to help shape this city.”According to the League of California Cities, this West Sacramento City Council is the only all-female council in the greater Sacramento region, and one of six women-only councils in the state.”This is a group of leaders who are here because their heart and soul are in making West Sacramento a greater place to live,” said Mayor Pro-Tem Quirina Orozco. “For that, it’s an honor and privilege to have an opportunity to serve with them.”Mayor Martha Guerrero was also sworn in for a new term. She expressed her readiness to lead the city as it enters this new chapter.”We all have different perspectives, but we’re going to be doing a great job in continuing to help our city grow economically and preserve some of the beautiful things that we’ve been doing all these years,” Guerrero said. “So we’re going to roll up our sleeves and get to work.”
