WEST HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — West Hartford’s mayor is calling for a task force on the heels of a two-car collision Sunday morning that killed three people.
Police arrived at about 6:50 a.m. at Simsbury Road near Timberwood Road, according to authorities. Two people were pronounced dead at the scene. At third person was taken to a hospital, but later died.
Simsbury Road was closed in both directions from Bloomfield Avenue to Mohegan Drive until about 3 p.m.
“We are deeply saddened and heartbroken by the tragic loss of life, especially during this holiday season,” West Hartford Mayor Shari Cantor said in a written statement. “The families and friends of those involved in today’s incident will be in our thoughts and prayers.”
The city plans to create a task force on traffic and pedestrian safety, which Cantor said will be announced early next week.
“Although the fatal motor vehicle collisions that have occurred in town over the last week are isolated incidents, any loss of life is unacceptable,” Richard Ledwith, the town’s manager, said in the announcement. “We are constantly studying, evaluating, and improving road safety, and plans are already underway to step those efforts up with the creation of a traffic and pedestrian safety task force.”
The triple-fatal crash comes on the heels of two other deadly crashes that happened within the last week in West Hartford. On Tuesday, an 89-year-old pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run. The following day, another pedestrian was also killed.
