West Allis Mayor Dan Devine is bruised but thankful to be alive after being hit by a car Monday morning.He was taking his dog, Molly, for a walk along one of their normal routes. Devine hit the crosswalk button to go across Root River Parkway at Oklahoma Avenue. There was a vehicle waiting to turn right when Devine and Molly were given the signal to cross.”I don’t think the driver was looking toward me. They were watching traffic coming from the left, so he began his turn and bumped me,” Devine said.Devine stayed on his feet when it happened. He has a bruise on his hip and scratches on his knuckles. His dog ran out of the way before the impact, so she’s fine.”If that car had been going five or 10 miles an hour faster, it would have been worse,” Devine said. “And then I think of when people genuinely are getting hit by cars, not just these little bumps like I had this morning.”The mayor didn’t contact police because his injuries weren’t severe, and the driver checked on him at the scene. He’s not trying to shame the driver that hit him but to raise awareness among other drivers to be more cautious.”Be careful when you’re driving because you need to have that added responsibility and constant realization, the fact that you’re behind a car and they can do a lot of damage,” Devine said.
