VIENNA — Vienna City Council unanimously voted during Thursday’s regular meeting to instate a $1.65 an hour raise for full-time and part-time nonseasonal employees starting April 1.

The resolution stated all current full-time permanent employees, excluding law enforcement officers, will receive a $1.65 per hour pay raise. All current, non-seasonal, part-time employees will also receive a $1.65 per hour increase.

The longevity pay of 35 cents for full-time employees will remain the same.

It also stated that all new hire full-time employees, excluding law enforcement officers, will receive a $2 per hour starting pay increase.

Councilmember Kim Williams said she supported the raise and she hoped it would allow Public Works Director Craig Metz to recruit applicants.

“The starting salary in his department is $14.89 (an hour). So, he would be able to increase that by $2 right now. So that would help him hopefully get some good applicants and find him some folks. He’s down four people with retirements on the horizon,” she said.

Finance Director Amy Roberts said the starting pay increase would make Vienna Public Works competitive with Parkersburg.

“The idea was to get the starting wage to $16.89, when Parkersburg Utility Board starts at $16.74, so we feel like that is competitive in the area that we are searching,” she said.

Roberts said law enforcement officers weren’t included due to a $2.88 per hour raise being passed by council Aug. 10, 2023.

Council member Tom Azinger was absent.
