CASPER — On Tuesday, City of Casper councilors again invite citizens to share their opinions on proposed changes to city law affecting electrical code.

When it meets in regular session tonight, the council will read for the second time an ordinance that changes six sections of municipal code and adopts the 2023 National Fire Protection Association 70, National Electrical Code.

Due to ongoing and extensive renovations at City Hall, the Casper City Council will meet in The Lyric, 230 W. Yellowstone Highway. The June 20 regular public meeting starts at 6 p.m.

The council passed the proposed amended ordinance on first reading June 6. The ordinance must pass on three readings to become law.

As required by state law, the City of Casper must adopt the same building codes as the state within the same calendar year. All various sections of the city’s adopted building codes are on a three year update cycle, with the National Electrical Code, last revised in 2020, a year ahead of all other building code updates.

To maintain local enforcement authority, City Attorney Eric Nelson has told councilors the City of Casper has to adopt at least the same electrical codes the state has adopted or forfeit the right to regulate its own citizens.

City of Casper Community Development officials have predicted proposed changes to municipal electrical code on average could add $500-$1,000 to newly-built residential homes of typical construction.
