Trenton City Council to honor residents who exemplify the best of the City – Trentonian | #citycouncil

TRENTON – Last week Trenton’s City Council announced their plan to continuously acknowledge a resident or two for their hard work and dedication in the City.

“We are going to honor someone or two people, each council member on rotation, at our council meetings to just highlight what some of our great Trentonians are doing,” South Ward Councilwoman Jenna Figueroa Kettenburg announced.

The cycle this week began with Councilwoman Kettenburg selecting two residents.

The first recipient was Carl W. Harris who was recognized for his hard work and service in the community. Harris has worked at Neon Bar on East Hanover Street in Trenton for 35 years and spent the last 9 years at Tony Liquors, the same location, for a total of 44 years.

On May 31, 2020, protests broke out across the county after the death of George Floyd. Following a peaceful demonstration from protesters during the day, chaos erupted later in the night with several businesses, including Tony Liquors, being damaged and looted.

Harris, 73, remained in the store protecting the merchandise and property even after the owner closed shop as a safety precaution. Harris continues to work and volunteer part-time at Tony’s.

Harris was recognized for “his continuous service to the community and sense of stewardship for local business here in the City of Trenton.”

The second recipient was Jessica Nazario, for her scholastic achievements, both academic and extracurricular.

Nazario is a junior at Trenton Central High School, maintaining A’s and B’s in all subjects while participating in various extracurricular activities including student council, being a member of the Esteem Makeover Project, co-anchoring the school news production, and live coverage of Trenton High School basketball games with her teacher on WBCB 1490 AM radio.

After high school, Nazario plans to graduate from college and become a teacher or school guidance counselor.

Jessica Nazario was recognized for her “academic excellence and civic contributions to Trenton Central High School and within the City of Trenton.”
