This is the advice Tuscaloosa’s mayor has for other cities that hold presidential debates
FOR NOW, BACK TO YOU. IN THIS RACE, WE’LL BE CHECKING IN WITH JON PAEPCKE OVER THE NEXT SEVERAL HOURS HERE INSIDE THE SPIN ROOM. THIS IS SIGNIFICANT FOR THE U OF A CAMPUS AND NOT JUST FOR THE UNIVERSITY, BUT FOR THE CITY OF TUSCALOOSA AND THE STATE OF ALABAMA. IT IS THE FIRST TIME THAT OUR STATE HAS HOSTED A PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE JUST LIKE THIS. YEAH, WVTM13’S MAGDALA LOUISSAINT IS HERE IN T-TOWN WITH US AS WELL. AND SHE SPOKE WITH CITY OFFICIALS ABOUT IT. MAGDALA. THIS IS A BIG DEAL FOR TUSCALOOSA. IT IS A BIG DEAL FOR TUSCALOOSA, IAN AND LISA, AND YOU KNOW WHAT ELSE MAKES IT A BIG DEAL? THE CITY OF TUSCALOOSA IS SETTING THE TONE FOR COVERAGES LIKE THIS. AND THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT MAYOR WALT MADDOX AND I TALKED ABOUT. NOW, AS WE KNOW, MAYOR MADDOX IS TELLING US THAT TUSCALOOSA IS A PURPLE CITY BECAUSE IT IS EVENLY DIVIDED WHEN IT COMES TO POLITICS. AND MORE THAN HALF OF THE STUDENT POPULATION AT UA ARE FROM OUT OF STATE. THAT’S WHY HE BELIEVES TUSCALOOSA IS THE PERFECT CITY TO HOST AN EVENT LIKE THIS. NOW, I ASKED MAYOR MADDOX IF A PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE SIMILAR TO THIS COMES BACK TO ALABAMA AND POSSIBLY IN ANOTHER CITY, WHAT ADVICE WOULD HE GIVE ANOTHER CITY MAYOR? HERE’S WHAT HE SAID. BE TRUE AND AUTHENTIC TO YOURSELF AND THINK MORE LIKE LIKE A MAYOR. NO ONE COMES TO ME AND SAYS, THAT’S A AS LAGUARDIA SAID, THAT’S A REPUBLICAN OR A DEMOCRATIC POTHOLE. THEY JUST WANT IT FIXED. PEOPLE TURN TO GOVERNMENT TO HELP SOLVE ISSUES WITHIN THEIR LIFE THAT FALLS IN THAT DOMAIN. NOW, ALABAMA IS CONSIDERED OR TYPICALLY VOTES REPUBLICAN AND IS NOT CONSIDERED A SWING STATE WHEN IT COMES TO PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES OR ELECTIONS. SIMILAR TO THIS. BUT MAYOR MADDOX SAYS THE CITY OF TUSCALOOSA IS UNIQUE AND BRINGS SOMETHING DIFFERENT TO THE POLITICAL TABLE. AND WE’RE GOING TO TALK ABOUT THAT AT 6:00. WE’RE LIVE IN DOWNTOWN
