TEXARKANA, Texas – The Texarkana Texas City Council voted unanimously Monday to approve two contracts with Symmetry Sports for improvements to the Grady T. Wallace Park and the Swanger Complex.

Texarkana Soccer Association President Gene Joyce said the organization is asking the council to approve the proposed improvements to Grady T. Wallace Park.

Joyce said of the 1,200 players, the 196 coaches and the 50 referees, the proposal will help catapult the park into a regional premier showcase park.

The new fields will offer sidewalks, better restrooms, shade, quality concessions and easy access for emergency vehicles.

Mayor Bob Bruggeman said, “Thank you for your leadership role and we thank you for all the work you do, it is time-consuming, and you’ve worked very hard.”

The council approved the contract for just over $3 million to construct the soccer complex from funds budgeted in the 2023 Bond Fund and the General Fund.

The following resolution proposed construction at the Swanger Complex at Spring Lake Park.

Dixie Youth Baseball Board VP Brandon Allison said, “I believe we can grow with these types of improvements and bring in more travel to the area with this higher-quality facility.”

Allison also said, “We notice a lot of our players travel a lot to other facilities that have this turf installed, so this will also help to grow our number of players.”

Currently, the number of baseball players is 550, and next weekend will be the first kick-off tournament.

This project is not to exceed $8.2 million, with funds budgeted from the 2023 Bond Fund.

The next council meeting is scheduled at 6 p.m. on Monday, March 25.
