TERRE HAUTE, Ind (WTWO-WAWV) — During a live interview Tuesday, Terre Haute Mayor Duke Bennett answered questions regarding several important issues and events in the city.
First, Bennett talked about the decision by Indiana State University to decline an opportunity to host the NCAA Super Regional baseball tournament. It comes after the Sycamores won the Terre Haute Regional over the weekend.
“It’s disappointing, I understand with the Special Olympics coming to town, Terre Haute’s got a rich history hosting it for over 50 years, said Bennett. But looking back, it would have been good to know that there was an opportunity to have a community discussion, we could have supported ISU in a way to ensure that this happened. I didn’t really find out about the deadlines until yesterday that it had already expired”
The mayor also said he felt it would have been feasible to host the Super Regional and Special Olympics.
“I think it would have been nice to have had an opportunity to try to deal with those issues and I think we could have,” said Mayor Bennett.
Bennett also talked about the new collaboration between three local non profits and the Terre Haute Police Department to embed a social worker in the police force.
He also provided an update about the progress concerning the casino in Terre Haute and how the city has worked with Churchill Downs. Also, that next week the casino will hold a “topping out” event at the construction site.
The mayor also was asked about the implementation of the app called My TH 311 plus. He said it’s been well received and had a lot of downloads. He says the app makes it easier for the public to contact the city about issues or problems.
