Sylvania residents currently have to travel over 20 miles to get hard liquor, but that could change soon. Earlier this month, the owners of Chilitos Mexican Grill requested Sylvania City Council consider approving them for a special license that would allow the restaurant to add hard liquor options to their drinks menu.
“We keep getting requests from our customers, wishing they could get a drink,” said co-owner Ana Segura.
However, the city does not allow hard liquor in any capacity, and the code of ordinances only allows for the sale of malt beverages and wine. Segura said they simply would like to sell hard margaritas and similar drinks, and if they were allowed to do so, they would do it responsibly and make sure anyone drinking would be of legal age.
City Administrator Stacy Mathis explained that, in order to allow this, the public would have to vote on it, which is why the council has agreed to discuss adding it to the November ballot.
“I think it’s a good thing,” Segura said. “Ultimately, the people will decide.”
Residents like Stacie Chisom commented that she has no problem with hard liquor being allowed, and Lora Williams echoed those thoughts, adding “I think it would be good too, just to get them more money. I think they’re gonna sell more with alcohol there.”
The council is set to discuss this subject on Tuesday, June 28, at 6 p.m.
