Sitting down with North Tonawanda’s first openly gay mayor

We are talking about Pride Month this weekend on In Focus. JoDee Kenney was joined by North Tonawanda Mayor Austin Tylec, who took office as the city’s first openly gay mayor at age 29 in 2022. Tylec says the city’s Oliver Street Pride Fest is slated for Sat., June 17, with shops and restaurants downtown participating. The mayor says the city will be installing two new flag poles at city hall and hopes to hold a Pride Flag raising soon. Tylec says he hopes to foster an inclusive North Tonawanda that embraces its diversity. Before he was elected mayor, Tylec served four years in the common council, and talked about his accomplishments in getting legislation passed that put the city on a solid financial footing. As for his priorities as mayor, Tylec says development along Oliver Street, thanks to $1.5 million in funding, will reshape the streetscape, and other projects will help reconnect communities.
