U.S. Senators from Alabama expressed their pro-life sentiments following Sen. Lindsey Graham’s introduction of a bill that would ban abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy nationwide.
They went short of saying whether they would support the bill if it came up for a vote.
“Senator Shelby believes that human life is a gift that should be cherished and protected, particularly when it comes to the unborn. Throughout his time in Congress, Senator Shelby has supported pro-life values and ideals and plans to continue to do so for the remainder of his career,” Blair Taylor, a spokesperson for Sen. Shelby’s office, told AL.com late Tuesday.
Graham’s bill, filed Tuesday, comes three months after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled to overturn Roe v. Wade and several months before midterm elections that may be influenced by increased turnout of Pro-Choice voters, as polls show a majority of voters opposed the court’s decision.
Sen. Tommy Tuberville similarly confirmed his commitment to pro-life beliefs.
“Sen. Tuberville believes life begins at conception and has long been a pro-life advocate. This includes supporting pro-life legislation, and also opposing nominees without pro-life records,” Hannah Eddins, a spokesperson for Sen. Tuberville told AL.com on Tuesday.
Graham previously introduced a bill to ban abortions at 20-weeks. His latest bill moves the restriction to 15 weeks and includes exemptions for rape, incest and for pregnancies that present a risk to the health of the mother.
“Abortion is a contentious issue,” Graham said at a press conference Tuesday. “Abortion is not banned in America. It is left up to elected officials in America to define the issue … States have the ability to do [so] at the state level, and we have the ability in Washington to speak on this issue if we choose. I have chosen to speak.”
