Sarah Stewart wins Republican candidacy for Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice | #republicans | #Alabama | #GOP

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Sarah Stewart wins the Republican candidacy for Alabama Supreme Court Justice in Tuesday’s primary elections.

Stewart received 61.6% of the vote while Bryan Taylor got 38.4%, according to the unofficial election night results from the Alabama Secretary of State’s office.

Stewart currently serves on the Alabama Supreme Court as an associate justice. She was elected in November 2018 for a six-year term. Before that, she served 13 years as a circuit judge in Mobile. She was also the first female jury trial judge in that area.

“I think the key to this campaign was the fact that I have 19 years of trusted judicial leadership,” she said following her win. “That, I think, resonated with the voters of Alabama. I think that the key to going into the November election is, again, that leadership and that time that I’ve had with the child court system and on the Supreme Court. It’s great to have that trust.”

Meanwhile, it was a somber mood at Jimbo’s Soda Fountain in Mt. Laurel where Bryan Taylor held his watch party. The rollercoaster of emotions started with dozens of people feeling excited and positive for their candidate.

Taylor is co-founder of the Bachus, Brom, and Taylor law firm where he focuses on constitutional law and appeals, election law, and public policy. He also served as legal counsel to the Republican party and two Alabama governors, including most recently Gov. Kay Ivey. In 2010, he became the first Republican elected to the State Senate from the 30th district.

He ended the night saying he’s proud of the campaign he ran and is humbled by all the support he received across the state.

“First, I want to thank everybody across the state,” he said. “I was really humbled by the support we had from every corner of the state. We worked hard and I’m really proud of the positive campaign that we ran. It’s been a great experience. Unfortunately, things didn’t turn out the way tonight that we’d hoped. At the end of the day, I love the law. I love this state and we all just want what’s best for the courts. I want to congratulate Sarah Stewart on winning this race. At the end of the day, God’s in control and I wish her the very best in the race going forward.”

Taylor says his plan now is going back to practicing law and standing up for the clients he represents.

Stewart will now face off with Democrat Greg Griffin in the upcoming November election.
