Samantha Copelan showed gratitude toward her family, friends and supporters in Tuesday’s Alabama primary election after she earned the republican nomination for Lee County’s district judge, Place 2.
After a few hours of the polls closed on Tuesday, unofficial results from the Lee County Meeting Center confirmed that Copelan won the seat. The win secures Copelan’s spot on the ballot in November’s general election.
“I’m incredibly thankful for my friends and my family and every person in Lee County that supported us through this journey,” she said. “It’s been an honor to meet people on the campaign and build friendships that I think will last a lifetime.”

A total of 14,626 residents voted in the Republican primary for Lee County’s district judge, according to the Alabama Secretary of State’s website.
Copelan won 57.06% of the votes or 8,346 votes. Clay Thomas received 27.28% of the votes or 3,990 votes. Harold Morris walked away with 15.65% of the votes, which translates to 2,290 votes.
Copelan served in pivotal positions such as felony contract defense attorney, prosecutor for the City of Auburn and defense attorney for Lee County Child Support Court. In September 2022, Copelan opened her own law practice in Opelika —Copelan Law Firm.
Copelan said she’s excited for November’s general election. She’ll spend the next few days resting and recharging with her family before gearing up for November.
She thanked her opponents for “running strong, positive campaigns.”
“I think we all pushed each other to do more and work harder, and I think that showed in all of our efforts in this race,” she said. “I know that it’s important for us to come together to ensure that we have strong, Christian conservative elected in November.”
After losing the nomination, Thomas took to Facebook to thank everyone who gave their time, money and support to me in this campaign.
“I said it on the campaign trail, and it is absolutely true… Lee County is the best place to live and raise a family,” he said.
Thomas congratulated Copelan and thanked Harold for “running a good, strong race.”
“She worked incredibly hard, and she has my full support moving forward,” he said.
Morris took to Facebook to thank those who supported him.
“This experience has reminded me of all the sweet, true friends that I have… And that is so much better than a vote. A special thank you to everyone who allowed me to put a sign in their yard, or wore my T-shirt, or just gave me an encouraging word,” Morris said.
