‘Why not do it differently?’ Sacramento’s Mayor Steinberg discusses unique approach to State of the City
Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg is talking about the state of the city this week. However, his State of the City address isn’t just happening with one speech.Steinberg is hosting three-panel discussions instead, two of which have already taken place.A panel discussion on Monday focused on creating a more vibrant local music scene and expanding Sacramento’s creative economy.On Wednesday, at the second of three talks, Steinberg explained a new tack the city wants to take in emergency response involving the city’s unhoused population.Steinberg said the city’s fire department is going to be tasked with leading that response with help from other city and county agencies.”This is an all-hands-on-deck approach with the fire department in the lead,” Steinberg told KCRA 3’s Melanie Wingo. “We’re not just giving it to them, and the fact of the matter is, they are the first responders for most health crises, you call 911, unless it’s a crime in progress, if somebody’s suffering a heart attack or another medical condition, it’s the fire department that responds. So this is going to be real consistent with what they do, but they’re not going to do it alone.”The plan isn’t finalized, but city leaders say it’s just one idea they’re going to try.The third part of the State of the City is set for Friday.
