Several members of the Sacramento City Council on Tuesday announced a new policy proposal aimed at increasing affordable housing in the city. The campaign, called Sacramento Forward, envisions a ballot proposal to “generate sustainable funding for the city’s housing trust fund.” Details on the plan were not spelled out during the announcement. The next steps would involve getting at least two members of the council’s law and legislation committee to vote on whether to direct staff to work on language for an ordinance. Councilmember Katie Valenzuela, one of the leaders of the campaign, is the chair member of the committee. Others on the committee weren’t at Tuesday’s announcement. But councilmembers Caity Maple and Mayor Pro Tem Mai Vang joined Valenzuela and other community leaders in calling for the need for a comprehensive approach on affordable housing development. Asked whether the process might take three months, Valenzuela said she thought it would take more time than that.
