RPI Rallies Past Union at Mayor’s Cup, 3-1

ALBANY, N.Y. – A three goal third period from the Engineers of RPI propelled them to a 3-1 victory over the Union College women’s hockey team at the Capital Districts Mayor’s Cup. Union falls to 1-4 all-time in the Mayor’s Cup.

Entering this year’s Mayor’s Cup neither team has managed to score more then 2 goals as the winning team. RPI is the first time in the five games history to score more then 2 goals with their 3 goals this afternoon.

First-year Riley Walsh scored the teams lone goal in the first period. Sophomore Sophie Matsoukas was excellent in net stopping 33 shots in the loss.

Both teams traded chances in the early going, but it was Union who capitalized on an intercepted pass. Walsh jumped a defense to defense pass and skated in alone. She ripped a shot from the slot and beat RPI net minder Amanda Rampado over the glove for a 1-0 Union lead.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net but two late penalties by the Dutchwomen in the final seconds of the second period, left Union with a 5 on 3 to start the third period. RPI out shot Union 22-16 through two periods, and neither team had capitalized on the power-plays.

Union killed the first of the 5 on 3 penalty, but RPI was able to sneak a shot through Matsoukas on the second penalty to even the score a 1-1 just two minutes into the third. The Engineers grabbed their first lead of the afternoon with a backdoor feed that connected and RPI led 2-1.

Union will fall to 1-4 in the Mayor’s Cup, with their only win coming in 2020. The Dutchwomen went 0-3 on the power-play and 3-4 on the penalty kill.

The Dutchwomen will return home for a weekend series with Yale and Brown. Union takes on Yale on Friday, February 3, with puck drop at 6 p.m. from Messa Rink.
