Rep. Barry Moore beats incumbent to win 1st Congressional Dist. Republican primary | #republicans | #Alabama | #GOP

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – U.S. Rep. Barry Moore will be the Republican candidate on the November ballot in District 1, after defeating incumbent Rep. Jerry Carl on Super Tuesday.

Moore has moved to District 1, but 83% of those voters are the same ones that previously elected him to District 2. His new district is the result of orders from the U.S. Supreme Court for Alabama to redraw its congressional district lines.

But even with a potential new seat in District 1, Moore says his mission remains largely the same.

“We serve our district, we take very good care of our constituents,” said Moore. “I think the 83% that we won in the old district across some of those counties, that resonates, that shows you that we’re doing the work that the people appreciate.”

Compared to his previous district, District 1 has more industry, but Moore says this isn’t something he can’t handle.

“There’s a little more industry in the Mobile Port area, but you’ve still got the military ties, you still have the [agriculture] ties,” Moore said. “It does stretch me a little in that sense, but I’m a business owner, I’m a veteran, and I’ve got an [agriculture] science degree, so I tell everybody I understand all three aspects.”

While Moore says he doesn’t know his Democratic opponent well, he says his views best align with Alabama voters.

“The conservative ideas, the secure border, the economy, quit sending money overseas, spend it on infrastructure and Americans first, I think those things resonate regardless of party, regardless of demographic,” said Moore.

Both the Republican and Democratic primaries to replace Moore in the 2nd District are set for runoffs April 16.
