President Joe Biden has nominated former Boston mayor Marty Walsh to become a governor of the United States Postal Service.Walsh’s nomination will be considered by the U.S. Senate. If approved, Walsh would become one of the nine governors that make up the board of the USPS. According to the USPS, the Board of Governors is comparable to a board of directors of a publicly held corporation. The board consists of up to nine governors, the deputy postmaster general and postmaster general, making a full board composed of 11 members. Walsh, 56, served as mayor of Boston for nearly two terms, taking office in January of 2014 and serving through March 2021, before leaving for Washington, DC. The Dorchester, Massachusetts native spent two years serving in the Biden administration as the Secretary of Labor of the United States before leaving the federal government in February 2023 to become the executive director of the National Hockey League Players’ Association. He spent 14 years as a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives.
