Pooler City Council held its first meeting of the year Tuesday night. It was also Karen Williams’ first council meeting as mayor. At the meeting, the council made some new changes. First, it appointed council member Aaron Higgins as the new mayor pro tempore. “I want to bring the city government back to the people,” Higgins said. On top of prioritizing the community, Higgins also said he plans to focus on addressing growth in the city.”We’re expected approximately double in size in the next 5 to 10 years,” Higgins said.That means Pooler’s population will drastically rise from 30,000 to 60,000 in the near future. He said new infrastructure such as parks and transportation are needed to maintain with the expected population boom. Mayor Karen Williams also proclaimed January as human trafficking awareness month, mentioning Chatham County is the 4th highest for sex trafficking in Georgia. “That’s what this proclamation was, to stand up and say that city of Pooler stands behind the awareness of sex trafficking and that we will do everything we can with other organizations to stop this horrible crime,” Williams said. Other top items on Tuesday’s agenda included pushing back the council meeting start time from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and hearing an update on Pooler’s tennis complex construction.
