Some residents named concerns about city worker’s safety and financial responsibility as reasons for wanting the mayor out of office. “Financial irresponsibility, safety of city employees, turnover rate at the city for long-time employees,” Dennis New of the Apopka Citizens for Honest Government said.Nelson was also criticized for keeping Apopka Fire Chief Sean Wylam in his position following concerns that came after firefighter Austin Duran’s death.Duran died after being injured while working. Later, Apopka city leaders said they had “no confidence” in the fire chief.On Thursday, Nelson told WESH 2 he has seen Wylam make improvements. “The chief has made vast improvements. He’s getting out there, he’s doing more things to try to rally the troops around this team effort,” Nelson said.New sent a statement to WESH 2 after the petition didn’t get enough signatures. “While we fell short of the stated number of petitions needed, we did achieve a remarkable number,” New said in a statement. “In the end 1,692 petitions were signed, the sad part is if the people who stopped to tell us they support the effort but could not sign due to fear retaliation.
