One day until special election to fill city council seat | #citycouncil


DES MOINES, Iowa — In just a day, Des Moines residents will have a chance to participate in a special election, electing someone to fill the at-large council seat previously held by Mayor Connie Boesen. 

“Any time you have somebody joining the council, you have to have someone who understands the city and cares about the city,” Boesen told Local 5 last month.

Over the past few months, Local 5 has spoken to the candidates about why they are running for the seat, and what they hope to accomplish if elected. Whoever takes over Boesen’s term will finish it out until early 2026. 

Five candidates are running for the special election:

Polling locations in Des Moines will open bright and early at 7 a.m. on Tuesday. Voters have until 8 p.m. to cast their ballot. Early voting closed Monday at 5 p.m. If you are looking for your polling location, visit the Secretary of State’s website.

Local 5 will have team coverage as the results come in on election night.
