BENTON, Ark. (WOWT) – An Omaha homicide suspect who escaped custody in Arkansas over the weekend has been apprehended.
Wuanya Smith, 20, wanted in connection to the shooting death of 20-year-old Anthony Collins III on Aug. 12, had been arrested in Arkansas last week but escaped custody at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, according to officials with the Saline County Sheriff’s Office in Arkansas. He allegedly climbed over a barbed wire fence surrounding the detention center.
Not quite 24 hours later, the sheriff’s office had posted on its Facebook account that Smith had been caught and arrested.
According to KARK, an NBC affiliate in Little Rock, authorities believed that Smith had left the area, but later found out he had remained at a residence in Little Rock. He was captured there at 9:30 a.m. Monday and arrested along with two others facing harboring charges, authorities said.
During a news conference Monday afternoon, Saline County (Ark.) Sheriff Rodney Wright said security footage from Sunday morning showed Smith got out of the facility within 45 seconds, “scaling a 12-foot razor wire fence at the jail facility” and then an 8-foot barbed-wire fence, the KARK report states.
