Springdale, Arkansas hosts regional school safety summit
Educators from school districts across Arkansas met in Springdale on Tuesday to talk about school safety.The event was planned before a high schooler killed 19 students and two teachers at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas.”We’ve not really changed our plan really from the events that happened in Texas but it’s on our mind as well,” Damon Donnell, director of student services for the district, said. Attendees talked about school shootings along with other safety topics such as suicide, abuse, and vaping.”I hope that they find one or two or three or four or five things that they are like ah, those little aha moments that they can take back to their district and make their students and staff and community safer,” Donnell said.People from 26 school districts across the state were invited.”I’m willing to give anything we have in Springdale to other districts,” Donnell said. “I just want that in return for them to give us their things also and we can learn together.”Gov. Asa Hutchinson said last week he’s reconvening his school safety commission. He formed it in 2018 after a shooting at a high school in Florida killed 17 people.The commission released a report that December.
