The city of Milwaukee Department of City Development (DCD) announced nominations are open for the 27th Annual Mayor’s Design Awards, which recognizes Milwaukee development projects.

“Milwaukee is always changing with new public spaces, new buildings and imaginative additions to neighborhoods. We celebrate the very best of what’s new in our city with the Mayor’s Design Awards,” Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson said in a statement. “Every year people step up with remarkable nominations with make the design awards a wonderful celebration.”

The program honors recipients who add value to their neighborhoods by restoring, constructing or enhancing their properties in a way that respects the urban fabric and contributes to the character of their surroundings, DCD officials said. Large iconic buildings, small business storefronts and community-let public art installations qualify.

“The past year brought exciting new developments to neighborhoods throughout the city of Milwaukee. From new housing to commercial storefronts and businesses, gathering spaces and public art, we know that good design makes a real difference,” said Lafayette Crump, commissioner of DCD. “The Mayor’s Design Awards provide a chance to highlight worthy projects, and the designers, developers, property owners and neighborhood partners creating beautiful buildings and public spaces. I encourage everyone to nominate deserving projects that are helping to grow Milwaukee,” he added.

The DCD encourages nominations from the public, individuals or organizations involved in nominated projects, officials said. Qualifying projects must be in the city and must have been completed or nearly completed before Jan. 1, 2024.

The deadline for nominations is March 1, and winners will be honored at an award ceremony in May.

There were 20 projects awarded in last year’s competition, including the Rite Hite Headquarters, The Ascent and Komatsu Harbor District Campus.
