The advisory group includes 19 other people who work for anti-recidivism, public safety and criminal justice organizations. The announcement comes as Steinberg considers running for reelection. On April 20, a local epidemiologist was the first person to announce her candidacy for Sacramento mayor, a move that has fueled questions around the likelihood Steinberg runs again. Steinberg’s spokesman, Andrew Kehoe, told KCRA 3 on Friday the new appointment will have little impact on his work as mayor, and that Steinberg had not yet made a decision on running for reelection. Kehoe noted the latest appointment is similar to when Newsom tapped him to co-chair a task force on homelessness in 2019.
