New mayor and council sworn in | Uncategorized

On Monday, Dec. 19, Eddyville’s mayor and city council were officially sworn in. While this marks a new year for the city, the roster contains many familiar faces.

Mayor-elect Greg Greene was serving as a member of Eddyville City Council before being elected. He began his current term in 2018 when he was appointed by outgoing Mayor John Choat. Choat was filling his own vacancy, as he had been appointed to fill the position of mayor because of the passing of former mayor Nancy Slaton.

Choat made the decision to appoint Greene by consulting the results for the previous city council election. Greene was the candidate to receive the highest number of votes of those who did not win a council seat, so Choat offered him the position.

Choat did not seek reelection as mayor, and Greene announced his intent to run in June of this year. He was unopposed.

“I believe there is no greater place in Kentucky to live, work, attend school and raise a family,” Greene said, in his announcement of his intent to run. “I pledge to you, as your mayor, we will keep the city government transparent and progressive. We will always have an open-door policy for visitors.”

All other members of city council sought reelection, and all were reelected. Two newcomers threw their names into the ring as well, and former mayor Judi Stone was elected to round out the six city council seats. The city council is now made up of Tammy Stone, Michael Greene, Leigh Ann Conger, Jerry Peek, Julie Wadlington and Judi Stone.

All city council members and mayor-elect Greene were sworn in by retired Kentucky Supreme Court Justice Bill Cunningham. Cunningham is a Lyon County native and served the city himself in the capacity of city attorney.
