EAST ALABAMA – (WTVM) – Alabama’s Presidential Primary night was nothing short of busy and rainy, but that didn’t stop voters from heading to the polls. In East Alabama, eyes were on several local races, one of them being the race for Chambers County School Superintendent.

Dr. Sharon Weldon beat Incumbent, Dr. Casey Chambley by a large margin, over one thousand votes. I spoke to Dr. Weldon after her win and she says the focus of a school system must be on the students.

“Even when we talk about unity and moving forward, I know that if we’re focused on the students, then we’re all focused on the same thing and moving in the same direction,” she said.

In Lee County, Jeff Drury was elected County Commissioner for District 3, beating 15+ year Commissioner, Gary Long. There is no Democratic challenger in November.

I sat down with Drury today and he says he’s ready to get to work.

“I feel honored to know that the people are now going to entrust it to me, to see if I can make some decisions and change for Lee County. Like I said, my goal is to leave it better than I found it,” he said.

In Russell County District 7 race, Brent Comer held a lead over his opponent and won with a whopping 73% of the vote. Comer says he plans to use his background in small business to move District 7 forward.

“I’ve got a background in small business, which is managing money and resources. I want to use my background to ensure the residents in District 7. We’ve got a lot of areas that need improvement and I want to be an advocate for the residents in District 7 to make sure we’re making those improvements,” said Comer.

Both Comer and Dr. Weldon will go on to the General Election in November to face Democratic opponents.
