The Town of Mountain City Council members accepted a gift from the Pickleball Association during the December council meeting.
The City council unanimously passed a resolution to accept the donation of nets and court improvements. Mayor Jerry Jordan read a proclamation to acknowledge the Mountain City Pickleball Association’s efforts.
“We really appreciate you bringing something different to Mountain City,” said Alderman Dustin Sheerin.
The pickleball courts had come a long way since November of 2021 when Johnson County celebrated opening the county’s first pickleball courts. Originally designed for tennis, the dilapidated courts were repurposed so residents could play pickleball.
During November’s city council meeting, Claude Poisson of the Pickleball Association approached the council to donate the results of all their hard work.
The Pickleball Association member addressed Mayor Jerry Jordan and the alderman to discuss donating and thanking the city council for allowing the organization to renovate the nets.
“We accomplished our goal,” said Poisson during last month’s council meeting. “Thank you for letting us do this.”
Poisson described some more recent work the Pickleball Association has completed for the pickleball courts.
“We raised enough for six nets. We did not want to compromise the infrastructure by drilling, so we found a company designed a plate for the posts,” said Poisson, adding, “They are permanent but can be removed at any time with no blemish to the court.”
The group has put a lot of hard work and effort into making Mountain City’s pickleball courts a great game destination. In addition to renovating and putting up banners, the organization has been instrumental in increasing awareness and love of the game.
The number of people playing pickleball has grown over the last few years, and the sport reaches across the generations. Attesting to the game’s popularity, the courts are frequently used by the Johnson County Senior Center’s members, high school students, and community members.
“We have a lot of teenagers playing,” said Poisson.
After expressing appreciation for all the Pickleball Association has accomplished, Mayor Jordan explained the donation would be formally accepted during the December city council meeting.
