A task force has been created to find “everyone responsible” for a New Year’s Eve shooting that killed a 24-year-old man and injured nine other people, Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson announced Sunday.
“I am outraged at the violence that occurred last night in downtown Mobile. I am beyond disgusted that the actions of one or two individuals with suspected gang affiliations have taken a life, injured others and tarnished what should have been a safe and fun event,” a statement from the mayor read.
Stimpson said he met with police leaders and federal law enforcement.
“A task force has already been launched dedicated to finding everyone responsible for last night’s shooting and holding them accountable. We will use every resource available to MPD and my office, and I have complete confidence that the perpetrators will be brought to justice,” Stimpson said.
The shooting happened around 11:14 p.m. in the 200 block of Dauphin Street, which is a few blocks from where thousands of people gathered to celebrate during the 15th annual MoonPie Over Mobile event.
A 24-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been released.
The surviving victims range in age from 17 to 57 and were taken to hospitals with injuries ranging from non-life-threatening to severe. Two businesses were also struck by gunfire.
A police statement issued Sunday morning described the shooter as “an unknown subject.”
