Mayor Woodfin says the claims that the Birmingham Jail is underfunded are not “fair”

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – After Tuesday’s State of the City address we caught up with Mayor Woodfin on a number of a topics. This included the Birmingham Jail. You may recall but the city now suing Jefferson county Sherriff Mark Pettway, and asking a judge to force the sheriff to accept some of Birmingham’s inmates.

This is an ongoing issue between city and county leaders. The discussions have been over funding, logistics and what kind of message this would send to other municipalities in the county.

Just last Friday, commission president Jimmie Stephen’s released a statement saying quote

I spoke with Mayor Randall Woodfin today following his state of the city. I asked him if claims that the jail has been underfunded and under supported over the years are fair.

“Those accusations I would say are not fair and that those accusations are coming from someone who is not a city employee. What I can tell you about that person who made that accusation is that he is attempting to control the sheriff who is a constitutionally elected official and the city is unfortunately wrapped up in democratic and republicans politics that are above our pay grade,” said Mayor Woodfin.

The mayor apologized that he wasn’t able to go into more detail due to the fact that this is now pending litigation.

We will continue to follow this story and as more updates come out we will update you both on air and online.
