The Jackson City Council got a look this week at a draft contract for garbage collection in the city.A committee made up of city employees suggested Richard’s Disposal for the contract after examining the Requests for Proposals. The city received two RFPs, but the second company did not meet the qualifications.Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba will present the contract to the council, which will approve or vote down the proposal. According to the draft contract, the city would pay Richard’s $891,000 a month to pick up garbage twice a week, Monday through Saturday. The agreement also stipulates that Richard’s supply 96-gallon trash carts to residents. Ward 3 Councilman Kenneth Stokes has said that he’s vehemently opposed to giving the contract to Richard’s, which has a history of legal battles with the city. Council President Aaron Banks has scheduled a Ward 6 meeting for 6:30 p.m. Thursday to discuss the proposal with residents. The meeting will be held at Glory Empowerment Center at 115 Maddox Road.The draft, which was released Wednesday, did not list the garbage collection fee residents would be expected to pay. However, Lumumba has said that it will be more than what Jackson residents are currently paying.The mayor’s office said the “contract represents the best and most affordable option” for Jackson residents.
