Mayor Nomura visits Honduras for service trip | News

Carpinteria Mayor Wade Nomura recently traveled to Honduras on behalf of the Rotary Foundation to evaluate 34 water and sanitation projects in Tocoa and Trujillo, Colon in Honduras, to make recommendations for improving and expanding the projects.

These projects were done in public primary and secondary schools, and benefit over 5,000 students from 5 to 18 years of age; projects included adding drinking water for the schools and communities, bathrooms with flushing toilets, handwashing stations for the schools and hygiene education for the schools and communities.

These projects were done through Rotary and partnerships with the local municipalities. Rotary held meetings with local mayors and regional directors of education with the hopes of using these projects as models, and expanding to all schools in the region.

“The project maintenance is supported through an assessment of each family of two dollars a month and includes maintenance of the facilities and drinking water. This cost can be justified as it used to cost five to eight dollars just for drinking water prior to this project,” Nomura told CVN
