Mayor, Fire and Police Chiefs Brief Residents on State of City’s Storm Readiness – Pasadena Now

City officials in Pasadena held a press conference on Saturday, August 19, at the City’s Emergency Operations Center, cautioning residents about the impending tropical storm Hilary expected to hit by Saturday night.

Pasadena Mayor Gordo was joined by Pasadena Fire Chief Chad Augustin and Police Chief Gene Harris at an afternoon press conference in the City’s Emergency Operations Center where they briefed Pasadena residents on the latest storm information and the state of the City’s readiness.

The Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is currently active at Level Three, with plans to elevate to Level Two by Sunday, they said.

A shelter is slated to open at Villa Park at 9:00 AM tomorrow. The City is also coordinating transport routes to aid residents in reaching the shelter.

Fire Chief Augustin emphasized the city’s number one priority: the safety of its residents.

“Our actions leading up to this storm show that we are prepared for an emergency and are doing everything possible to protect our community,” Augustin stated.

Residents are strongly urged to stay at home, especially since the storm’s most severe conditions are expected on Sunday, with lingering effects into Monday. Besides heavy rainfall, high winds could potentially lead to downed power lines, fallen trees, and localized flooding.

In an urgent warning to locals, Augustin said, “Don’t attempt to drive through standing water. Don’t attempt to drive. If it’s not safe, take that time to shelter in place and stay in a safe, warm place with your family.”

Pasadena Police Chief Gene Harris announced the activation of Area C notifications to work in mutual aid with County partners, ensuring a strategic response to potential emergencies.

Stressing the importance of staying indoors, Harris remarked, “This is a time where if you ever wanted to stay home and stay cozy with the family, this would be a great opportunity to do that.”

Mayor Victor Gordo addressed the dual concerns of the storm, including water and wind. He urged those residents who might be on the roads to be cautious of fallen branches and power lines. He also highlighted the importance of checking on vulnerable community members, especially seniors, to ensure their safety.
