Mayor Eric Adams: There’s No Stopping New York City

Mayor Eric Adams unveiled his tailored blueprint for the working-class residents of New York City at the Hostos Center for the Arts & Culture at Hostos Community College in the Bronx. Having assumed office two years ago, Adams has been focused on enhancing public safety, revitalizing the city’s economy, and fostering a more sustainable urban environment.

Addressing New Yorkers, Adams highlighted a series of achievements under his administration. These include a robust crackdown on crime, characterized by an increased police presence in the city’s streets and subways, alongside efforts to combat the fentanyl crisis and the removal of 14,000 illegal firearms from circulation. Additionally, Adams underscored his commitment to addressing the immigrant issue by assisting over 172,000 asylum seekers with essential provisions such as food, medical assistance, and shelter.

“New Yorkers were rightfully concerned about their safety, their security, and their families,” said Mayor Adams. A main goal Adam expressed is to get crime “ under control” in the city. In order to do this, he’s improved NYPD’s training and increased pay and benefits for law enforcement. The current objective of the police department according to Adams is to address the fentanyl crisis, car theft, retail crimes, anti-semitic and Islamaphobic hate crimes, and to crack down on illegal smoke shops selling cannabis to their children.

“When crime goes down, jobs go up. When crime goes down, tourism goes up. When crime goes down, our quality of life goes up and when all these things go up. There’s no stopping New York City,” said Mayor Adams.

Adams outlined in his address the goals he has for New York City, stressing that public safety is one of the mayoral offices major concerns. Pedestrians, cyclists, drivers and delivery workers are the group of New Yorkers he’s aiming to help by planning to create a Department of Sustainable Delivery, which will establish goals and guidelines for traffic safety.

“We also must also protect the drivers and delivery workers who show up in New York at all times of day and night in all kinds of weather,” said Mayor Adams.

After the pandemic, New York City was able to regain all the public sector jobs lost in Covid-19–270,000 private sector jobs and 44,000 businesses. Continuing in that direction, his goal has been to uplift working class New Yorkers into a better economy by wanting to have job growth reach 5 million total jobs by 2025.

“More jobs mean more prosperity for every New Yorker — because all New Yorkers deserve to share in our city’s success,” said Mayor Adams.

New York will remain the city where people come to make it.

Adams proposed an array of economic initiatives to stimulate New York City. The administration will unveil the “Green Economy Action Plan”, aimed at reducing emissions and creating a more sustainable New York, as well as usher in 400,000 green economy jobs by 2024. The New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) will also invest $100 million to create the “Climate Innovation Hub” at the Brooklyn Army Terminal, a hub that plans to create clean tech innovation and manufacturing that will assist with the “Harbor of the Future” initiative to create 53,000 temporary and permanent jobs.

The administration has made a $6 billion-plus investment in minority- and women-owned businesses, in hopes that this “Women Forward” plan will provide new services and benefits to women, such as maternal mental health care, improved screening for postpartum depression, and helping women experiencing domestic violence, women in shelters, and women leaving incarceration.

“New York will remain the city where people come to make it. This is the destination for young people to start their careers, for immigrants to build a better life, start a business, and live the American Dream,”said Mayor Adams. “That dream is what draws so many to our shores and our city, and we are proud to uphold our legacy of welcoming the tired, the poor, the huddled masses yearning to breathe free.”
