Mayor Cantrell to travel to France for renewal of Sister City Agreement with Orléans, Inaugural Paris New Orleans Jazz Festival
Mayor LaToya Cantrell is in France for the renewal of the City of New Orleans’ sister city agreement with Orléans, in conjunction with the Orléans Loire Festival, as well as the inaugural Paris New Orleans Jazz Festival. “It is my honor and privilege to be invited to France on behalf of the City of New Orleans to not only renew our Sister City Agreement with Orléans but to also participate in and witness our city’s rich culture and heritage on full display at the inaugural Paris New Orleans Jazz Festival,” said Mayor LaToya Cantrell. “Our history and culture are greatly intertwined with the French, tracing back to our city’s founding in 1718. These deep-rooted ties are alive and well today, as evidenced by the display of our architectural heritage, cuisine, prevalence of the French language and even His Excellency Emmanuel Macron’s visit to New Orleans in December 2022, which signified the first time a French President visited our city in nearly 50 years. As France continues to be a major exporting and trade partner today, it is vitally important that we continue to cultivate and strengthen our relationship, as well as create new ones. I look forward to growing this beneficial collaboration and sharing exchanges on cultural, educational, economic and governmental affairs that will further showcase our standing as the world-class international city that we are.” From Sept. 19 to Sept. 21, Mayor Cantrell will visit Orléans, France to meet with Mayor Serge Grouard of Orléans, as well as other Orléans’ sister cities Mayors, where they will share and exchange dialogue on each city’s climate adaptation efforts, including water conservation. While there, Mayor Cantrell will also re-sign New Orleans’ sister city agreement with Orléans to strengthen the City’s renewed partnership.From Sept. 22 to Sept. 24, Mayor Cantrell will visit Paris at the invitation of Anne Hidalgo, Mayor of Paris, who also serves as President of the International Association of Francophone Mayors, for the inaugural Paris New Orleans Jazz Festival. This festival is a cultural exchange of New Orleans’ music and cuisine, as well as a revitalization effort of the Goutte d’Or neighborhood, in partnership with the Paris 360 Studio, the New Orleans Jazz Museum and the Dillard University Ray Charles program.The New Orleans Jazz Museum is sending three bandleaders, including James Andrews, George Brown and leader of the Original Pinettes Brass Band Christie Jourdain, as cultural ambassadors of the New Orleans jazz tradition. Each evening, they will lead a group of Parisian musicians in the interpretation of original arrangements of emblematic New Orleans classics to showcase New Orleans’ French connection.In addition to the musical performances, the New Orleans Jazz Museum is partnering with Director Zella Palmer and the Dillard University Ray Charles Program on African American Material Culture to also showcase Chef Serigne Mbaye of New Orleans restaurant, Dakar NOLA, in organizing a culinary program designed to bring the best of New Orleans cuisine to Paris.While in Paris, Mayor Cantrell also anticipates to meet with Secretary-General of the International Organization of la Francophonie Louise Mushikiwabo to discuss ways to further promote and expand the use of the French language throughout New Orleans.Mayor Cantrell will return to New Orleans on Sunday, Sept. 24.
