Man suspected of attacking member of San Jose mayor’s security detail

A man was arrested on suspicion of physically assaulting a member of San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan’s security detail this week, police officials said.

The man, who was not immediately identified, was booked into the Santa Clara County Jail, Acting San Jose Policehief Paul Joseph said Wednesday in a statement. It was unclear what charges the man might face.

The incident happened Tuesday in downtown San Jose while Mahan was being interviewed by a reporter, officials said. The man approached the group and allegedly exhibited “aggressive” behavior towards them, officials said.

Despite several attempts by a security guard on the mayor’s team to deescalate the situation, a physical altercation ensued between the two. The security guard is a police officer who was dressed in plain clothes and assigned to the mayor’s security team, officials said.

A video of the altercation posted on X shows both men fighting on the sidewalk for several minutes.
