Lynchburg and Roanoke will both hold primaries for some city council candidates on June 18.
The deadline for filing for party nominations was Thursday. In Lynchburg, all four Democratic candidates for council are unopposed as are three Republican candidates. However, as expected, there will be a primary for the Republican nomination in Ward IV between incumbent Chris Faraldi and challenger Peter Alexander.
In Roanoke, four Democrats will be vying for three council nominations in the primary. All the Republican candidates are unopposed.
Here’s who’s running in each city, with the proviso that party officials must still verify the petitions submitted by their candidates. That may not happen until next week.
Lynchburg
Here are the candidates who will be running as party nominees in the November general election.
Ward I: Randy Smith (D) vs. Jacqueline Timmer (R). Open seat; MaryJane Dolan retiring.
Ward II: Sterling Wilder (D-incumbent) vs. Rodney Hubbard (R).
Ward III: James Coleman (D) vs. Jeff Helgeson (R-incumbent).
Ward IV: April Watson (D) vs. the winner of the June 18 Republican primary between Chris Faraldi (incumbent) and Peter Alexander.
Roanoke
Here are the candidates:
Mayor: Joe Cobb (D) vs. David Bowers (R) vs. Stephanie Moon Reynolds (I). Open seat: Mayor Sherman Lea is retiring.
For three at-large council seats: Four Democrats are seeking three nominations in the June 18 primary: Terry McGuire, Jamaal Jackson Phazon Nash and Benjamin Woods. The three winners will face Republicans Jim Garrett and Nick Hagan for three seats.
