Local credit union honored at El Centro City Council | Business | #citycouncil


EL CENTRO — The City of El Centro presented a proclamation to officials and board members of Sun Community Federal Credit Union at its regular meeting, Tuesday, April 2 at City Hall. 

Mayor Sylvia Marroquin presented the plaque to Patrick Carey, CEO, who was accompanied by Chairman of the Board Juan Cruz, and Board Member Ester Gomez. 

The proclamation, read in part: “The El Centro City Council congratulates Sun Community Federal Credit Union in celebrating 70 years of service. Thank you for providing exceptional service, and for keeping member satisfaction as your priority. 

“Now, therefore, I, Sylvia Marroquin, Mayor of the City of El Centro, State of California, do hereby proclaim March 16, 2024, as ‘Sun Community Federal Credit Union, 70th Anniversary’ in the City of El Centro.” 

“Thank you, Mayor. We are honored to have this proclamation,” Carey responded to Mayor Marroquin and the City Council. Carey introduced both Cruz and Gomez to Councilmembers. Cruz is in his 10th year as a volunteer with the credit union, and Gomez, is in her 18th year. 

“You have epitomized the word ‘community’”, said Councilmember Edgard Garcia, emphasizing that the credit union has engrained its services in the community for the past 70 years. Their projects include helping students with FFA Projects and sponsorship in community events. 

“Sun Community holds a special place in my heart,” said Mayor Marroquin. She told Carey as he stood before councilmembers that she has been in the banking industry for more than 25 years, and 15 of those years were with Sun Community until she reached the position of branch manager. 

In seven decades, Sun Community has grown to eight branches in the region: Brawley, Calexico, Calipatria, El Centro, Holtville, Imperial, Indio, and Palm Springs. It has a membership of 50,000 and total assets of $760 Million, according to Patrick Carey, CEO.
