SAN DIEGO (KSWB) — Legoland California could soon be going intergalactic, as the theme park is set to debut a new area similar to Disneyland’s Tomorrowland with a Space Mountain-like rollercoaster at the center.
The new 2.38-acre land, called “LEGO Galaxy,” would feature attractions for park guests to immerse themselves in space exploration, including meet-and-greets with intergalactic travelers and “blast off on missions,” according to documents on the project from the Carlsbad Planning Commission.
It would replace the existing “Driving School” and “Junior Driving School” attractions, which have been staples of the theme park since 1999.
Two rides would be featured in the new LEGO Galaxy area. The main attraction would be a galactic exploration rollercoaster housed inside a 44-foot-tall, 32,000-square-foot LEGO “space port.”
The secondary ride would be a space-themed, lift and spin-style ride, similar to SeaWorld San Diego’s Riptide Rescue.
Outside rides, the new LEGO Galaxy land would also feature retail, a children’s play area and other attractions — like a Lego brick building area.
While it remains in the early planning stages, the Carlsbad Planning Commission has recommended approval of the LEGO Galaxy project and will move to a vote by the Carlsbad City Council in the coming weeks.
According to planning documents, Legoland would also look to rebuild the driving school tracks in the area currently occupied by the “Fun Town Police” and “Fire Academy” attraction.
A timeline for the project’s construction has not been announced. FOX 5 reached out to Legoland California for a statement on the project and is awaiting response.
This is one of several development projects in the works for Legoland California. The next one set to open in spring 2024 is the park’s “Dino Valley,” featuring a new dinosaur-themed safari and river expedition ride located next to the popular “Coastersaurus” rollercoaster.
