LAREDO, TX (CNN) – Texas will be allowed to enforce a contentious new immigration law while it works its way through the courts.
The U.S. Supreme Court cleared the way for state officials to begin enforcing a controversial immigration law.
That law known as SB-4 allows them to arrest and detain people they suspect of entering the state illegally.
Critics point to racial profiling problems with the law in a state where 40 percent of the population is Latino.
This is a huge development, not only for the U.S. but for communities along the border.
Laredo Mayor Dr. Victor Trevino issued a statement on the matter saying, “As Americans, we are a country of laws which must be followed,” said Dr. Trevino.
“With that being said, my biggest concern with Texas SB-4, is that local law enforcement does not have the resources or training to take on what should be a federal responsibility.
The mayor said that the city has reached out to the state for more guidance and will inform the public as more guidance is released.
