But Lucas said the big increases some homeowners are facing could hurt the city’s ability to grow. “I think there will be a substantial number of appeals,” Lucas said. “I think this will be a mess of a process. So what I would say right now is, let’s try to act up front.”Lucas said his own property tax assessment was up 67 percent from last year. He hopes Jackson County sets up a payment plan for homeowners struggling. “I would hope our partners in Jackson County can find a way to perhaps stagger these types of increases to work with people who are going to have very real challenges,” he said. Currently, Jackson County has no payment plan. The county is currently installing a new payment system, but it is not expected to be ready into these tax payments. But Lucas says something needs to be done. “Because I’m scared people could be losing their homes in a little while,” Lucas said.
