Justyn Lewis is the second candidate to publicly announce his bid for Des Moines’ vacant at-large city council seat.Lewis launched his campaign Friday. He ran for the same seat in 2021, an election that now-mayor Connie Boesen won with about 54% of the vote.The city says no candidates have filed the official campaign paperwork yet, but Mike Simonson announced this week that he was running. The council voted earlier this week to hold a special election to fill the seat that was left vacant when Boesen was elected mayor.The city council decided Jan. 26 the special election needs to take place as soon as possible, calling for the special election on March 19, “the earliest practical date.”The city clerk will now send that requested date to the county auditor.
