LEWISTON – At Monday’s work session the Lewiston City Council and Mayor reviewed 14 applications for the vacant City Council seat. The group discussed the pros and cons of the top 4 applicants for almost 30 minutes before narrowing down the pool to 2 front runners.
At the end of the discussion, Mayor Johnson motioned to appoint John Spickelmire to the vacant position. The vote was then unanimously approved by the City Council.
Spickelmire was born and raised in Grangeville and attended Lewis-Clark State College. He served in the Navy for 7 years and is now retired from the State of Alaska Federal Aviation Agency.
Councilor Schroeder noted she was impressed with Spickelmire’s career, noting his experience with budgets, leadership and teamwork. She said it was important to her that the chosen candidate had no party affiliation or special agendas. Throughout the meeting each council member noted that all of the top 4 candidates were qualified to fill the role.
Spickelmire will serve until the next general city election. During the next general election, a new council member will be voted in to fill the previously appointed or vacant position.
