Jefferson County sets special election to replace commissioner | #elections | #alabama


The Jefferson County Election Commission has set the date for a special election to fill the Jefferson County Commission District 5 seat vacated by Steve Ammons.

The date is set for July 18, 2023. If a runoff is needed that date will be August 8, 2023. Candidates must file at least 21 days before the election.

Ammons resigned as commissioner effective May 31, leaving the seat vacant as of June 1. In the interim, the commission will operate with four members.

Ammons resigned to become CEO of the Birmingham Business Alliance.

Ammons, a Vestavia Hills resident and U.S Navy veteran, Ammons was initially elected to represent District 5 on the commission in 2018. He was re-elected in 2022, running essentially unopposed. Previously, Ammons served two terms on the Vestavia Hills City Council.
