Claps and celebrations made their way into city hall Tuesday night as the new Jackson State University president, Marcus Thompson, addressed city council members.”I’m excited about the journey ahead, and I’m confident that together we will continue to build on Jackson State’s strong legacy of challenging minds and changing lives,” Thompson said.Most council members were welcoming, but one is on the fence about the new selection. Councilman Stokes was not in attendance because he decided to boycott the meeting. Stokes believes that Thompson was wrongfully chosen by the Institution of Higher Learning last month. He thinks former interim president Elaine Hayes-Anthony should have been given the position. “Brother Thompson did not apply. How could reverend Thompson become the president if he did not apply? I feel that it’s sex discrimination,” Stokes said.Hayes-Anthony had been acting president since March when Thomas Hudson resigned.
